The Teaching of Poetry is designed for a course on the study of poetry for interested individuals and practicising teachers. The book spans across five chapters of the poetical journey from poetic devices and analysis of themes to the application of poetry to the literature in English classroom. Each chapter offers notes and theoretical information on the various aspects of this particular branch of literature, as well as tasks and activities to enhance the understanding of poetry. As learners teachers can refresh and reinforce their grasp of poetic insights from the notes and tasks and as teachers they can use the materials in the module to reassert the teaching and learning process in their classrooms.
This book aims to expose teachers to a variety of poems and techniques of teaching poetry. Literary devices (specifically poetic devices) and thematic usage of language will be explored through various teaching and learning methods. Continuous assessment modes will incorporate poetry analysis and the application of poetic devices as well as interactive group tasks that combine poetry-reading techniques, pedagogical approaches and literary appreciation. Class activities will include oral recitations of poetry, discussions of thematic subject matter, exposure to methods of poetry appreciation, and techniques of delving into the themes and issues related to this genre, via various teaching approaches. The inclusion of creative and innovative classroom strategies will also be explored, to enable future teachers to incorporate their pedagogical abilities into the teaching of poetry.
